May I report the very sad news that Fr Christopher Gawecki died on 4th August 2019 after a long battle with cancer. His funeral took place on Tuesday, 13th August at the church of Our Lady of Pity and St Simon Stock, Putney.
Fr Christopher has served this Parish for many years having arrived here as a curate to Canon John Formby who came here in 2001 as Parish Priest. After Canon John’s retirement Fr Christopher formally retired and looked after his brother during his final illness. He continued to say Mass here for Fr Jeremy Trood, Fr Christopher Silva and finally for myself. All of us benefited from his ministry at St Margaret’s. Fr Christopher was a diligent priest very attentive to the way he said Mass. Over the last year his illness meant that he was unable to say Mass regularly in the Parish or in Putney where he also served as a curate. He was a very private man and never let on how much his cancer had advanced so his death came quickly to everyone else. For myself, for my predecessors, and for all the parishioners here we owe a great debt to Fr Christopher who had his own particular way of being a priest. May he rest in peace after his long years of dedicated service.
There will be a Memorial Mass for him on Saturday October 5th at 10:00am followed by tea and coffee in the Hall.
Over the summer Fr Fitz also died after a long battle with cancer. For many years Fr Fitz used to come to supply at St Margarets and was known to a large number of elder parishioners. The monthly soup lunch was established to support his, successors Fr Cullen’s, missionary work in Zambia.
There will be a Memorial Mass for him on Saturday October 19th at 10:00am followed by tea and coffee in the Hall.
